My name is Dwayne Peterkin. I was re-baptized April 2011 and since then I have been doing my best to obey the Lord Jesus Christ and do his will. In this sinful world IT IS NOT EASY to stand up for God. You'll be tested, friendships may fall by the wayside, old habits will fade away. I hope that as I share my Faith Walk, others are encouraged on theirs. I hope you join me on this journey.

Re-posting…for today which would have been my Dad’s 84th Birthday. You are loved and missed….

Hello Friends,

My Earthly Father,  Fitzgerald Godfrey Peterkin  would have been 83 Years old today (Read Obituary here).

He always said “I set the standard, It is up to you to follow it”.

When my Father was in the hospital last year, I remember the morning my sister, my niece, and my mother were leaving the hotel they were staying at to go to the hospital.  As is customary in our family, we started to pray before leaving the house.  As we bowed our heads, I was waiting for my mom or my sister to pray, it was silent.

It was at that very moment I felt like the torch was handed to me and that I was now the Godly man of the house.  That is part of the reason I have this sincere passion and desire to follow the Lord, because my Father (Earthly and Heavenly)…

The Wilderness

Tasmanian-Wilderness Guess Who’s back?! It has been a few weeks since I have blogged…(I guess we all need some time off every now and then.) I can’t believe its been just over a year since I started this blog! I took some time to go over some of the first posts and I am glad to see the progress I have made in my life and God’s blessings since I started this phase of my Journey.

For me. the purpose of this blog is to inspire, invoke thought, and encourage those on their Faith walk and Life’s Journey. I felt like I was getting into a rut and that I was not bringing the quality of writing I started with and needed to come back with a renewed focus.

I recently attended a Men’s Weekend Retreat sponsored by my Church’s regional conference we were on 650 acres of campground, forest, and wilderness and I must say – the renewing of the Holy Spirit within me was truly amazing.  The connections made with “Men of One Accord” are priceless!

That weekend one of the speakers spoke of Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness. Moses time in the wilderness,  John the Baptist’s life in the wilderness, Saul’s time on the road to Damascus, etc. and how, at some point, we all need to be in the wilderness in order to get that true one on one time and focus with God.  One speaker stated the “men are made in the wilderness.”

Looking deeper into those stories you can see where that time in the wilderness got them to where God wanted them to be, focused them and united them with the Father.

At my retreat I was able to leave the cares of daily life behind and commune with the Father and it was truly a blessing. Matthew 6:6 says But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. If you can’t get away from it all, fine your secret place, somewhere private and meditate on Jesus and get connected.  When our steps are ordered by Him and are in harmony with His will, then we will surely see our purpose and His prosperity.

2 Corinthians 5:7 says For we walk by faith, not by sight,  and Galatians 5:25 says If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

My brothers and sisters let us strive to walk closer with Savior day by day for we know not the hour when He will come.  Get out in the wilderness if you can or find a secret place where you can reconnect with your God…you won’t regret it…

Until later, I’m just tryingtobeamanofgod…

Faith Becomes Sight

Reblogged from my Daily Devotional “Streams in the Desert”

stamps

“Have faith that whatever you ask for in prayer is already granted you, and you will find that it will be” (Mark 11:24).

When my little son was about ten years of age, his grandmother promised him a stamp album for Christmas. Christmas came, but no stamp album, and no word from grandmother. The matter, however, was not mentioned; but when his playmates came to see his Christmas presents, I was astonished, after he had named over this and that as gifts received, to hear him add,

“And a stamp album from grandmother.”

I had heard it several times, when I called him to me, and said, “But, Georgie, you did not get an album from your grandmother. Why do you say so?”

There was a wondering look on his face, as if he thought it strange that I should ask such a question, and he replied, “Well, mamma, grandma said, so it is the same as.” I could not say a word to check his faith.

A month went by, and nothing was heard from the album. Finally, one day, I said, to test his faith, and really wondering in my heart why the album had not been sent,

“Well, Georgie, I think grandma has forgotten her promise.”

“Oh, no, mamma,” he quickly and firmly said, “she hasn’t.”

I watched the dear, trusting face, which, for a while, looked very sober, as if debating the possibilities I had suggested. Finally a bright light passed over it, and he said,

“Mamma, do you think it would do any good if I should write to her thanking her for the album?”

“I do not know,” I said, “but you might try it.”

A rich spiritual truth began to dawn upon me. In a few minutes a letter was prepared and committed to the mail, and he went off whistling his confidence in his grandma. In just a short time a letter came, saying:

“My dear Georgie: I have not forgotten my promise to you, of an album. I tried to get such a book as you desired, but could not get the sort you wanted; so I sent on to New York. It did not get here till after Christmas, and it was still not right, so I sent for another, and as it has not come as yet, I send you three dollars to get one in Chicago. Your loving grandma.”

“As he read the letter, his face was the face of a victor. “Now, mamma, didn’t I tell you?” came from the depths of a heart that never doubted, that, “against hope, believed in hope” that the stamp album would come. While he was trusting, grandma was working, and in due season faith became sight.

It is so human to want sight when we step out on the promises of God, but our Saviour said to Thomas, and to the long roll of doubters who have ever since followed him: “Blessed are they who have not seen, and yet have believed.” –Mrs. Rounds

Hello Friends,

I will get back to Part 2 of my story next post –  I promise.

The past 3 mornings as I have gone out to my car to go to work, there has been a bird in my neighbors tree that  sings the most beautiful song.  (I think I’m going to try and record it).

The first day I noticed it and said “that’s a pretty sound”.  Other than the bird it was quiet that morning.  I thought it was a one time thing and then I heard it again on the second morning. I thought “wow that’s that bird again”. This morning as I heard the bird I said “Good Morning Bird”

This morning when I woke up for some reason two words came…

Trust IN…Don’t Trust THAT…

Image

I heard a story today about a police officer that pulled someone over and he thought it was going to be routine.  As he approaches the vehicle he smells alcohol and knows that this is going to be anything but routine. It turns out that the driver is a parolee that was released the day before and he has a gun in his waistband.  This felon does not want to return to prison.

The Cop orders the man out the vehicle and he tells the man to turn around so he can be patted down.  The perp has no intention of getting arrested so he whips around and pulls the gun out of his waist and points it at the officer.

At this point the policeman is more than an arms length from the parolee and the gun.  In a quick second he runs this scenario in his head.  Police are trained to put their vests on everyday so that if they are ever in a situation such as this, they can trust THAT the vest will save them from a bullet provided it is not aimed at their head.  In this moment, he tightens his stomach muscles and trusts IN his vest to absorb the first shot so that he can reach his gun and get off a shot.

My friends the greatest perp of all, the devil himself is ready to take a shot at us at any given moment.  Are you going to trust THAT you are going to make it through this life on your own and survive the wiles of the devil? His deceptions and temptations?  Ephesians 6 10-18 says:

armor-of-god-classic-

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.Or are you going to put on the Armor of God and trust IN Him who controls the universe and everything in it.

My Brothers and Sisters….Trust IN Him the Living God, have that personal relationship with Him and trust IN Him so that you can defeat anything that comes your way that is not of Him.

“…Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.” Joshua 6:16

Many have heard the story of Joshua and the Battle of Jericho. Some of us sang the song in Vacation Bible School  “Joshua fought the battle of Jericho and the walls came a tumbling down!”

Jericho was a big city, an impenetrable city, ten story walls…a Generals nightmare strategically.  No way to sneak up on it, No way to get past its walls. To look on that city from the outside must have been something.

The Lord promised Joshua that the city would be his. His if he trusted God, was faithful, and followed His instruction. In the Old Testament there are so many times where God gave instructions and they were to be followed to the letter, the exact measurement.  God is very specific, he doesn’t leave room for our interpretation.  He takes care of it all.

Looking the part…

IMG_20130112_102432

I was driving to church this past Sabbath and I looked down at myself and noticed the wood grain of the car I’m driving, the suit I’m wearing, the watch I have on and I laughed, because I didn’t have a dollar in my pocket.  But I said to myself, “I sure look the part!”

Often times the phrase comes to my head that 20% of the people in church do 80% of the work.  That means that 80% are just “looking the part”.  I am definitely in that 20% but I do not say that to boast.   The Bible makes it clear:

Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Ephesians 2:9 NLT

You see friends we are here on this earth to do God’s work and to do what Jesus commissioned His disciples to do:

And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Mark 16:15

I believe that our life on this earth is our proving ground to prepare us for the life in Heaven.  I believe that we are here to learn how to live in Heaven.   Loving our neighbor as yourself,  worshiping God, studying His word.   We will be transformed when we are caught up in the air at Jesus’ Second coming, but the true transformation begins right here and right now.

One of my favorite stories is in Matthew 25 : 34-40

34“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

Friends let us live the part and not look the part.  Let us strive every day to prepare ourselves for God’s kingdom and strive to be in that 20%.

May the Holy Spirit help you as you seek to “Live the part and not look the part”.

Until later, I’m just tryingtobeamanofgod!

Blessings!
