tryingtobeamanofgod

My name is Dwayne Peterkin. I was re-baptized April 2011 and since then I have been doing my best to obey the Lord Jesus Christ and do his will. In this sinful world IT IS NOT EASY to stand up for God. You'll be tested, friendships may fall by the wayside, old habits will fade away. I hope that as I share my Faith Walk, others are encouraged on theirs. I hope you join me on this journey.

He Will Not Leave You or Forsake You

Jesus holding

I can’t believe it’s been 3 months since I last posted.   I needed to write this update to proclaim God’s goodness.  The Lord provides and I thank Him for providing me a job.

The last 3 months were not easy but sometimes God makes us rest.  Sometimes he needs to break us down or tap us on the shoulder to remind us of our need for Him and our dependence on Him.   My goal was to continue to post during the storm, but looking for a job was a job and after being in front of the computer for so long each day, the last thing I wanted to do was blog.  I had good intentions, no follow through.  My apologies!

My prayer throughout these past month’s has been for God to open the door He wants me to go through and close all the others.  He did precisely that.

The job I took was in all honesty not my first choice.  As a matter of fact I wasn’t trying to take this job at all.  Let me explain.

You see the last job I had was an almost $20,000 pay cut for me, but I took that job because of family needs at that time.  The job I ended up taking,  I was called for and actually interviewed for it a month before I was laid off.  It was a local opening working at night,  and I thought it would be a great side job for extra income, the pay was no where near the salary I was willing to work for for a full time position.  It didn’t pan out and they did not offer me the job.

Then I got laid off.  I pounded the pavement, (or should I say surfed the internet!)  After a few weeks, I was pretty much promised a job after an interview that would have put me back in the salary range that I was used to, BUT it would have been a 2 hour commute each way.  I didn’t care though – I’d be back where I used to be salary wise. Then the side local side job I wanted called me back but I didn’t want to take the local job at night for what they were paying.  At last minute (as God would have it) they put that position on hold.

As I was  debating and praying if I should take the local job.  I was like “God,really? A $20,000 pay cut again? Nights?”  But when you pray and ask God for something and he provides it,  you can’t say “God I don’t want this one”  There were possibilities for other offers and contracts for way more money but they were all out of town (some out the country!) But the Lord provided this position and it’s just 8 miles down the road.

God works in mysterious ways.  After three months that job called me again because they hired a few people in that time that didn’t work out.   Originally I was going to do it as a side job but only God knew that it was going to be my job.

We never know what God has planned for us or how He will work things out in our favor.  One of my favorite Bible quotes is  Jeremiah 29:11-13:

11For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. (NLT)

Dueteronomy 31:8 says: The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (NIV)

So I trust and I wait to see why He has me where I am.  Living a submitted life provides much adventure because you never know what the day will bring,  You can be assured that God goes before you and knows what your day will be before you even wake so we need to trust that whatever may come, He has allowed it and will work it out for our good.

This is easier said than done.  It is hard to understand for us as humans because we cannot see the future.  He who holds time in His hand knows and it will be revealed to us in His time not ours.  One thing I know is that during my time of unemployment  He never left me. He never abandoned me.   My gas tank was never full, but it was never empty.  The refrigerator was never stocked, but I never went hungry.  I had no money for the things I wanted, but I had what I needed.   The Lord provides.

Living life on God’s terms and not your own is not easy but it’s humbling and rewarding at the same time.  You appreciate things more and you do more with less.  I’m thankful for His blessings and his constant refining process in my life.

Stay encouraged my brothers and sisters for Emmanuel (God with us) remains true to His promises Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

Until later, I’m just tryingtobeamanofgod.

Blessings,

Dwayne

Trust IN…Don’t Trust THAT…

Image

I heard a story today about a police officer that pulled someone over and he thought it was going to be routine.  As he approaches the vehicle he smells alcohol and knows that this is going to be anything but routine. It turns out that the driver is a parolee that was released the day before and he has a gun in his waistband.  This felon does not want to return to prison.

The Cop orders the man out the vehicle and he tells the man to turn around so he can be patted down.  The perp has no intention of getting arrested so he whips around and pulls the gun out of his waist and points it at the officer.

At this point the policeman is more than an arms length from the parolee and the gun.  In a quick second he runs this scenario in his head.  Police are trained to put their vests on everyday so that if they are ever in a situation such as this, they can trust THAT the vest will save them from a bullet provided it is not aimed at their head.  In this moment, he tightens his stomach muscles and trusts IN his vest to absorb the first shot so that he can reach his gun and get off a shot.

My friends the greatest perp of all, the devil himself is ready to take a shot at us at any given moment.  Are you going to trust THAT you are going to make it through this life on your own and survive the wiles of the devil? His deceptions and temptations?  Ephesians 6 10-18 says:

armor-of-god-classic-

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.Or are you going to put on the Armor of God and trust IN Him who controls the universe and everything in it.

My Brothers and Sisters….Trust IN Him the Living God, have that personal relationship with Him and trust IN Him so that you can defeat anything that comes your way that is not of Him.

Prayer Changes Things…

Image

To my friends and readers..Peace and Blessings. It’s been a few busy weeks since my last post, but thank God some of the madness has calmed down and I am back to the blog.  It’s funny that sometimes I have something in mind I want to write…but then sometimes there is something He wants me to write. Tonight is one of those nights.

To those who much is given, much is required.  I speak from experience when I say this, as I was appointed a Manager’s position at work in the last few weeks and my work doubled overnight!  I literally went from working 8 hours a day to at least 10 in the office and another 2 hours when I get home.  Don’t get me wrong – this is a great opportunity, it’s challenging, and I am accomplishing a great deal.

The Lord works in mysterious ways. When He has a plan for you, there is no way anyone can change it. For the most part, you can’t even mess it up.  A series of events occurred that caused me to be in this position.  I won’t go into all the details, but know that God can move things and people out of your way in order to bring you your blessing.

I say this to say that someone out there may be working at a job or in a position for a long time and you may feel that no one sees what you do, cares what you do, or sees your worth. I am here to tell you God sees you so don’t be discouraged. If you want things to change, all you need to do is pray, believe, and trust the Lord to take care of things for you.  It may not be overnight, but in His time you will be recognized and things WILL change.

I read in my devotional yesterday that sometimes God locks all doors except one, so that you won’t go through the doors that will not take you where God wants you to go and so that you can only pass through to where he wants you to be. Many times we have plans for ourselves, but God has His plans for us.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 says “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.

John 14:27 says “…Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Friends, Prayer is the key to all things and prayer changes things.  Go to the Lord and make the desires of your heart known to him and he will hear your prayers and answer them according to His will.  When you truly trust and truly believe in Jesus Christ our Lord you will see Him make moves and changes in your life.  I pray you stay encouraged and not discouraged and that you challenge His promises and see if  he doesn’t make moves for you.

Until later, I’m just tryingtobeamanofgod!

Blessings,

Dwayne

Breaking Down Walls

“…Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.” Joshua 6:16

Many have heard the story of Joshua and the Battle of Jericho. Some of us sang the song in Vacation Bible School  “Joshua fought the battle of Jericho and the walls came a tumbling down!”

Jericho was a big city, an impenetrable city, ten story walls…a Generals nightmare strategically.  No way to sneak up on it, No way to get past its walls. To look on that city from the outside must have been something.

The Lord promised Joshua that the city would be his. His if he trusted God, was faithful, and followed His instruction. In the Old Testament there are so many times where God gave instructions and they were to be followed to the letter, the exact measurement.  God is very specific, he doesn’t leave room for our interpretation.  He takes care of it all.

It must have taken great faith for Joshua and his army  to follow God’s instruction.  They were commanded to walk and circle around the city once a day for six days. Blowing their trumpets but they were ordered not to speak a word until they day they were told.

On the Seventh day, they circled the city seven times, and the last time around, the  seven trumpets sounded and the army was given the command to shout and the walls of Jericho came crashing down!

Friends, how faithful are we to trust the same God? We need that faith! What ever “walls” we have in our life – problems, addictions, whatever….We need to follow God’s Word, follow the instructions to the letter and wait on him to tell us when to shout for victory!

The same God who defeated Jericho, will defeat the Jericho’s in our lives if we only let him.  We need to trust, believe, and listen and the victory will be ours!

Stay encouraged and not discouraged and know that God is on your side.  Make you needs and desires known to Him and he will listen and tell you when to shout.

Be blessed! Until later, I’m just tryingtobeamanofgod!

The Crossroads

These are trying times! Decisions, Decisions! So many people right now that I know, (including myself) are going through it. Going through the valley of decision.  Someone may be thinking of doing something outside of their comfort zone,  deciding to leave a job, to sell a home, move to another city, leave a relationship or a marriage, the list goes on and on.  When we get to these places of major decision – these “crossroads” we need to remember Proverbs 3:5  “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Friends when you are at that intersection, don’t feel that you need to rush to make a decision to go left or right.  Instead, rush to your knees and seek the Lord in prayer. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says “Pray without ceasing.”   Ask for the knowledge, wisdom, and understanding from the Father and wait on him to answer you.

We live in a society of immediate gratification.  Every one wants it now!  At the same token, it is easy to want an answer to our prayers now!, but we need to wait  on God to answer us in His time, not ours. Psalm 27:14 says “Wait patiently for the LORD. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the LORD.”

Some people need to see things logically, or they need things to make sense,  or be able to visualize all possible outcomes in order for them to make a decision.  However NONE of us can predict the future. And NONE of us have all the answers.

That being said, we need to have Faith! (…easier said than done right!?) Having Faith is believing in the things we cannot see.  If we can see it we don’t have to have faith in it.  We don’t know what is going to happen if we decide to go left or right at that crossroad.  But we need to remember that God laid out our life path before we were even born so he already knows the out come.

So in our lives, in that period of time between what we see and the future, is “faith time”.  There in lies the delay between our prayer and God’s answer.  You should know that that delay (however long it may be) is the period of time where God is preparing your blessing and the answer to your prayer.

I recently sold my home and it took 15 Months to sell and believe me it was 15 months of “faith time”.  I had to truly wait on the Lord to provide that buyer and put all things together in his appointed time so that I could proceed through the intersection of the crossroads  so that the next chapter of my life can begin.  In that faith time I learned to have a great deal of patience and I TRULY learned to trust Him in all things.

Friends,  you may be at a crossroad in your life right now. If you are, if you need to make a decision remember Psalm 55:22 ‘Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.’

Until later, I’m just tryingtobeamanofgod….

Blessings!

A Near Death Experience (Divine Protection)

“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” Psalms 91:11

Easter Sunday morning my son had basketball practice.(if you don’t know by now I worship on the Sabbath (Saturday) so the church league had practice on Sunday.)

It was a beautiful morning in the Tampa Bay area so I decided to put the top down on the convertible and have a nice drive into Tampa on I-275.  We arrived at the church gym for practice and also being that it was the second Sunday of the month that is the day we prepare food to feed the homeless.

My son practiced, I prepared meals and we had a great morning, the day was still as beautiful as ever and we had another beautiful topless ride on the highway home.

Later that day my mother asked me to drop by her house because my brother was in town.  Cool, no problem as she only lives a mile from my house.  It was nearing the time to take my son home, so and I got in the car and headed to mom’s house before we took I-75 down to my sons house.  My mom has a very small dip in her driveway and then there is a slight incline.  As I pulled in to her driveway  at all of 2 MPH, I heard a LOUD “CRACK!!”  My cars axle broke in my mom’s driveway!

Suddenly everything going on in my life did not matter, all I could think about was how I was riding up and down I-275 at 70MPH all day.  It was only divine protection and intervention that prevented that axle from breaking at any other point in the day.

My family has a tradition that we never travel without asking for Divine Protection from dangers seen and unseen.  I am thankful for my heavenly angels are on the job because instead of writing this post, someone could have been writing my obituary. (And/Or my son’s for that matter).

When I was at the Men’s Retreat last month the keynote speaker Pastor Pierre Eddy Laguerre spoke of Death with this statement:

“This aspect concerns life as well.  This aspect of Life is a reminder that challenges us to make the best possible use of each moment of our lives.”

I am glad I serve a Risen Savior that loves me and protects me.  It draws me closer to Him knowing that He is not ready for me or my son and that with the “bonus time” we have been given, we need to make the best possible use of it.

Friends, don’t waste time, don’t assume you will be here on this earth forever.  No man is promised tomorrow.

God has given us each a choice as to how we want to live.  I think for me Joshua 24:15 says it best:

“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Until Later…I’m just tryingtobeamanofgod!

Dwayne

Do not worry about tomorrow…

Hi Friends,

It has been a few days but before I post the next part of My Story…I have been thinking about this all day and I wanted to share this with you…

I’ve said it before that if you pray don’t worry, and if you worry, don’t pray.

Worry literally is a waste of time. It robs you of your current time by having you think about something that might happen and, in most cases, never does.  How many times have you played the “what if..?” game and that “what if?” never happened?

Jesus says in Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?  in verse 27 He says “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”

Worry serves no purpose.  If you cast all your burdens on Him and trust that He will take care of you that is all you need in life. Believe me you will still have struggles and you will still be tested, but it is all in the way you choose to deal with these situations.  Especially situations that are not under your control.  You need to let go and let God!  It is not easy to do at first but the more you do it the easier it gets.

Jesus says “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today. Matthew 6:33,34 NLT

Brothers and Sisters, I am here to tell you first hand…Do not worry about  today, tomorrow, or anything!

Proverbs 3:5,6 says Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Until Later….I’m just tryingtobeamanofgod…

Blessings,

Dwayne
